  • I'm tempted to take away a star because they won't come to Akron -- it's part of the reason The Black Keys moved out of Akron -- but I'm still convinced that this is the best organic marketplace I have ever been to, including other Whole Foods Markets in much larger, organic diet-friendly cities. First off, the solar panels on the roof. This is Ohio, so in most years you wouldn't see much in terms of savings on the electric bill because we never see the sun here. But this year, Mother Nature has reversed our fortunes (please do the same, Sports Jesus?), so I'm starting to dig the solar panels on the roof. Next comes the produce. Wow. I can't think of any overused adjectives to describe how vast the selection is. It's like Giant Eagle on steroids. Except steroids cause shrunken testicles and can lead to cancer, so those are not used on the vegetables. They also sell 51 locally-grown types of veggies in the store, so they're really big on growing locally. I was impressed with the wine and beer selection. Outside of Jungle Jim's in Fairfield, OH, this is the supermarket with the largest variety of wines and beers, all of which are organic (meaning they're not filtered using fish eggs or something). Then I walked into the store itself, and I was blown away by all the samples. Cheese? Yes please!!! Cheap bread alternative made in the store? Don't mind if I do. I would live here if they gave free bacon samples *wink wink*. They also have name brands, but a lot of what you would find at Giant Eagle won't be sold here due to preservatives or hormones being added to lengthen the lifetime of the product at the risk of the consumer. While that sounds like a bummer not being able to buy Hillshire Farm lunch meat, I find that the Applegate Farms (or whatever they're called) organic lunch meats, while pricier, are superior in every way to Hillshire Farm. While I have been known to be hard in most of my reviews, I am being sincere when I say that I am kinda upset I live 45 minutes away from this store. Booo.
