| - What was I thinking? I kept walking by because the exterior and simple window display wasn't drawing me in. I have been missing out all this time!
I believe this store opened in early or mid 2015.
LOCATION
East side of Yonge between Bowood and Roslin Ave. A couple of doors north of Second Cup or 3/4 block south of The Friendly Butcher.
FLAVOUR
I'll admit that I'm extremely picky when it comes to chocolate. I do not like overly-acidic dark chocolate, preferring a well-rounded flavour like they have here. If you are a fan of Callebaut or Valrhona chocolate (popular among high-end restaurants and chocolatiers), you'll love their dark chocolate flavour profile.
This is one of only a couple chocolatiers (Theo in Seattle being the other) that I have had that have such a good 70 - 85% dark chocolate that is enjoyable straight up.
Their milk chocolate is insanely creamy and will be appreciated by both milk and dark chocolate fans.
They pretty much make everything from scratch ---- they use fresh mint and rosemary, make their own croquant (crunchy garnish) and caramel. I would describe their flavours as sophisticated, intriguing and often delicate. They don't shy away from spices and herbs. Don't expect trite convenience store or Halloween candy flavours here.
Their "Caramel - Fleur de Sel" truffle with dark chocolate shell is divine. The caramel filling tastes toasty with dark brown sugar notes and is sliceable (no corn syrupy, runny Caramilk here). I could eat far too many of these!
The "Fresh Mint" has a dark chocolate shell but has a fresh mint (like the name implies) white chocolate ganache centre. Very different than most mint candies because it is made with mint leaves and not mint oil. The delicate flavour was fascinating and refreshing.
The "Uganda 80%" has a gorgeous, creamy, classic dark chocolate ganache filling. This really lets the quality of their earthy, rich, dark chocolate shine through. AMAZING with red wine or port.
The "Gianduja Crunch" with hazelnut croquant and cranberry bits was excellent. The croquant was sort of Rice Krispie-ish. Butterscotch notes.
There is a unique, colourful cocoa butter decoration on the surface of each truffle flavour. They can do custom logos apparently, too.
PACKAGING
Beautiful. Very professional. A 5-piece pack would make an ideal host or office holiday gift; is has a little ribbon loop on one end to slide the inner box out plus a little window to reveal one chocolate.
PRICE
Probably ends up being $2 - 3/piece if you buy a box, but WELL worth the price.
ACCESSIBILITY
No steps up. No automatic door, so wheelchairs and walkers may require assistance opening it.
