| - I grew up in Louisiana so I was excited to come across a New Orleans themed restaurant. The server even said the restaurant was approved by the City of New Orleans, so I was quite anxious to try out the different dishes that I've been missing. First of all, I have to say that the ambiance is very inviting. When my boyfriend and I went, they had a live jazz band performing.
While the service was excellent, the food itself was subpar. First, we had the fried alligator. It was ok, but I think they should consider serving blackened alligator instead, because alligator can be quite fatty and frying it makes it even oiler. The frog legs were actually great. Super flavorful sauce. My only complaint with that dish is that I wish they gave us some bread to mop up more of the sauce because there wasn't much meat to the frog legs (of course) and there was a lot of yummy sauce left. We got two seafood jambalayas. Strangely, one of the dishes was lukewarm, while the other one was piping hot. The jambalaya tasted ok, but didn't resemble the jambalaya I grew up with. I think the rice was a bit too mushy and there wasn't any spice to it. We also ordered the crawfish tapenade flatbread. This dish was the worst as the flatbread was soft and mushy, and the crawfish and olives didn't go well together. We had to use utensils for this dish because it fell apart in our hands (as flatbread should not). For dessert, I had to try the beignets. The were the worst beignets I've ever had. I think what went wrong is that they fried the dough and then completely caked the beignets in the powdered sugar. If you let that sit around, then the powdered sugar gets mushy and crusted on, instead of lightly sitting on top of the fried dough. If I could recommend a change, I'd say they should try dusting the powdered sugar on, instead of tossing the fried dough in a bowl of powdered sugar. I have to say though that the housemade sorbets that were oddly paired with the beignets were excellent. Last suggestion to the restaurant is that they should hire a chef from New Orleans. I think that would help a lot.
Sorry this post is a bit of a rant about what they should change. I don't want to be too down on the place, but I came in with high expectations, and ended up paying a good amount of money for food that doesn't do New Orleans justice. Next time, I'll just save the money towards a plane ticket to NOLA.
