Yes, there is no doubt in my mind that the case can be made that the Stampede is but a caricature of a warped and incorrect vision of Calgary's wild west past. Supposedly, we are to embrace the wild west spirit by shelling out $16 just to enter a fairground that will find a way to overcharge you for everything and force you to deal with lines ups for cheap thrills that themselves will amount to very little personal benefit. Ok ... if you boil it down to a base level, I could not disagree with you.
Couple this with the fact that because of all the events going on, traffic is going to suck for 10 days and if you are unfortunate enough to live near a party tent you will be likely interrupted at 2 in the morning by music or fake cowboys conducting drunken shenanigans under the influence of cheap over-priced beer. And that sucks, it really does.
That being said there are also families spending a sunny afternoon together smiling. There are entry-level employees having a drink and laughs with the President of a company. There is dress-up to get out of your work clothes for two weeks of the year and allow visitors to partake in the energy of the city. There are opportunities to get away from the office and enjoy the outdoors or hanging out with friends. There is a cookie cutter environment at every bar and house party in town that seems to justify a reason to get a beer or shot at 10:00 am in the morning while having breakfast. But most of all, there are the breathtakingly wonderful cowgirls at heart that make this humble yelper fall in love. And those are the wonderful things of spirit!
Clearly, I am talking more than the grounds here. My 5 years conversion from the anti-stampede camp to the pro-stampede camp has lead me to but a single conclusion. Yes it is ridiculous that I am celebrating a fake cowboy spirit, but it really is about fun! And there is nothing wrong with a little bit of fun!
Hope you had a great Stampede!
