  • "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." So true here at the hair salon. PICKY? STAY HOME. Don't get me wrong. I'll gladly go there for affordable services and to support students pursuing their dreams, but know that, if you are picky, this isn't the place for you. Students' skill levels vary greatly. PUT ON YOUR MICRO-MANAGER HAT If they are doing something simple, you're probably fine. HOWEVER, you must micromanage the students and not be afraid to speak up. YES, they have an amazing instructor who will come by 2-3 times to check in on things. But, the instructor cannot watch each of them all the time. I find that these students do not mind polite reminders or hearing preferences; it's not like going to a professional salon where you are insulting an experienced "artiste" by telling them how to do their job. It is okay to recap (repeat yourself) part way through before they start a new process. Be specific. Don't say take an inch off. Show them what an inch is by holding up your fingers at the same time you say take an inch off. Tell them you don't want the longest part to be above your ear lobe, etc. That being said. Please be kind. These are students have always been eager to please; don't squash their dreams. You're still getting great bang for your buck. I've seen people be rude to these students for no real reason, and I just have cringed for them. Please tip; they are probably starving students. The payment thing is weird at the front (I think each student has to take turns managing the desk and is graded), so I give the tip straight to the student instead of trying to figure out getting adding it to my card. ALLOW 2.5 - 3 HOURS A student told me they have to use their entire time slot, which is a painfully long appointment. So, she took her time styling my hair, going over it again, and again, and again in slow-mo with hair-damaging-hot irons. That explains why the girl didn't pay attention to the time for the colour; she wanted to kill time. So my hair was frizzy because it does better with fast, intense heat instead. Plan on getting several simple things done to fill that time instead so one process isn't dragged out. I really wish the school would adjust this "use your entire time slot" policy because it really encourage poor results for certain services and discourages people from using the school because it can take entirely too long. I'm always in and out of traditional salons within 30 - 1.5 hours. SERVICES Hair styling, cutting, colouring. I have not tried their aesthetics (waxing) or make-up school. NO APPOINTMENTS; WALK -INS ONLY Silly they won't have a recording of their hours on their automated phone system or on their website. If they're teaching students how to run a business, isn't that Business ownership 101? Their last appointment is usually 2pm, but once a week they stay open later and take an appointment as late as 5pm. I think I overheard they have limited early morning Saturday appointments. Bring something to read since you'll likely have to wait if you aren't there at the start of the day on Saturday and sometimes Fridays. Pretty to easy to get in within 10-15 minutes on other weekdays though. SCHOOL I used to go to a salon to see one of their graduates. She was AMAZING, but went away to be a full-time Mom for a bit. So, they're school seems pretty good. LOCATION South side of Yorkville Ave. 5 minutes-ish Walking distance from Bloor Station (Yonge St), Rosedale Station, Bay Station, or Museum Station. Parking - there is a Green P parking at 37 Yorkville Ave. I think the street is one way so you have to be driving westbound. Don't worry, there is also Green P parking on Cumberland St (one tiny block south) if you're headed eastbound. I gave them 3 stars because of the amazing prices. I've never paid more than $35. But you get what you pay for sometimes which is why I couldn't rate them higher.
