| - Very bizarre experience. From the moment we walked in, I felt we were being eyed as potential shoplifters. If we were twitchy teens fingering a lot of items, maybe I could understand that but we're not. I engage the youngish clerk and told her we were looking for ballroom shoes for hubby. She got an older woman to help hubby and after some smiles and small talk, she warmed up.
This is where it got weird. While hubby tried on shoes, I saw a dress I thought my daughter would like so I started to snap a photo so I could text her. (We don't live in the area.) The youngish clerk hastened to my side and told me it was against store policy to take a picture of the tag. HUH? After some gentle inquiry, she told me the owner didn't allow it. (I later found out from the older woman that folks will look there and then buy online. Okay, I can get that.)
All while this was going on, an old man (Barry himself?) with a cane followed us and kept his eye on us. I gave him my winning smile but it did nothing to break the spell.
I bought the dress for my daughter and the clerk had to call another man up to ring up the purchase. Uh alrighty then. Was she on probation and not allowed to handle cash?
Hubby selected shoes and when we went to pay for those - the older woman who helped him had to get Cash Register Man to transact the purchase. All while the old man stood guard over the whole affair.
Hubby and I love to support small businesses and with a dancers in the family, we're delighted to find a shop - they are a dying breed. Until our experience here, that is.
I hate to leave a harsh review as the clerks seemed to be doing their best in what felt like a hostile environment.
It's hard for mom and pop businesses to compete with Amazon - UNLESS, they provide stellar service and distinguish themselves that way. I know we are not the only ones that will happily pay more for the service.
Barry's however, didn't do this. Whatever challenges they may be facing, I hope they realize that warm smiles and an inviting atmosphere would do much to keep their business competitive.
