  • In the early 1900's, Brooklyn Heights was a major center for greenhouse farming, with over 100 acres literally "under glass". As the decades passed, technological advances in agriculture and suburban sprawl combined to reduce this acreage significantly. Today, only several greenhouses remain, including Rosby's. Both avid gardeners and novices will appreciate the rustic charm of selecting their gardening supplies here. Rows of greenhouses are nestled amongst rolling hills, and you'd think you were in a rural area if not for the Cleveland skyline in the distance, just a few miles away. Once inside one of these barracks-like structures, the temperature quickly rises--the greenhouse effect in action. Flats of annuals and perennials are lined end to end along long tables, thriving inside this veritable translucent tent, with hanging baskets perched along racks above. A wonderful variety of flowering plants and vegetables are offered here, and not just for greenthumbs; they also sell houseplants, including exotic succulents, and check out their ready-to-go potted perennial mixes, perfect to tuck near an entrance or place along a walkway. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, eager to assist with large purchases or answer questions. Prices are a bit higher than typical "big-box" home and garden centers, but the variety, selection and service are far superior.
