| - I don't know if the guy who was serving my friend and I when we went here is the owner or not, but if he is ... buddy, is this your first time owning a cafe? Have you ever walked into one or seen how many people go in and linger with their books, computers, and friends?
To be clear, the place is furnished nice enough, the treats look fine, the coffee was okay (nothing mind-blowing, though the only brew I had was a regular iced coffee because it was a hot summer day), the patio looked cute (though it looked fenced off with no entrance? I didn't examine it carefully but that struck me as odd) ... but JEEZ.
(Also, no jazz was playing at all the entire time I was there. Not even a CD. Or if it was I didn't hear any of it. Um?)
I was meeting a friend of mine there and yes, we did stay a long time. We hadn't seen each other in a year and had a lot of catching up to do and chatted for an easy 3-4 hours. But at hour 2 (I can only assume, though it didn't feel like we had been there that long) this guy (who wears glasses and looks to be middle eastern) who had given us out coffee comes over and tells us there's a 2-hour cap on people staying seated unless they buy something. We look up, bemused, cause we were literally the ONLY people in the entire cafe.
Asides from the fact that we were going to buy more food and drink anyway (which we did), what the actual heck? Sure, I get it if you're a high-volume, short-on-seats establishment but if you're not, why are you trying to drive away customers who, in the end, would be of more benefit to your business staying seated than not? A cafe/restaurant with a few people in it always looks better to me than a completely empty one, but I guess this guy disagrees. On top of this, when we went to order food, we were asked in a not-so-subtle voice "Are you taking this to go?" No ... we weren't. But thanks for double-checking that with us.
Anyway, long story short, the employee(s) at this place is going to be its demise. Never have I seen a new, small, independent business treat its customers so rudely. I was really looking forward to checking this place out and bringing my friend there, but I'm fairly certain now that I'm never going back. I also fully discourage others from going too. There are plenty of coffee places in the Yonge/Finch intersection area that will treat you better for comparable prices, and won't try and shoo you out of their empty stores as soon as their timers tell them it's been 2 hours.
