  • The First Peet's in Las Vegas: It seemed like yesterday that I had reviewed a Peet's Coffee in Boston. In this review I said that it would be nice if Las Vegas had a Peet's Coffee. The owner or manager posted a comment on my review alleging that Peet's is looking into opening Las Vegas locations. And long and behold they opened their very first Las Vegas location in Summerlin right off the Town Center Drive exit of the 215 Freeway. Further into the review, I will discuss the location of first Las Vegas Peet's. The fact that I stated in a Yelp review that I would like to see Peet's come to Las Vegas is not surprising. Peet's has a long history of brewing coffee dating back to April 1966. It was in Berkeley, California that Alfred Peet opened his very first coffee shop. Right off the bat he developed a great reputation. By 1969, he had a coffee loving following nicknamed Peetniks. Today their rewards card is known as the Peetniks card. His followers would include the founders of Starbucks. Alfred Peet bestowed the founders of Starbucks with expertise on the coffee shop. Over the years Peet's would grow with stores, kiosks, and the acquisition of Stumptown and Mighty Leaf Tea. The newest store is evidence of Peet's growth. Earlier, I promised to talk about the location. Keeping my promise, I will emphasize that Peet's is close to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the Summerlin trail network, and Lone Mountain. It is right off the 215 Freeway that connects to the roadways leading to these hiking areas. For that matter, Peet's is a convenient option when you are using the 215 to get to Mount Charleston. It is so close to the outdoors that you can park by Peet's then cross the 215 interchange onto The 215 Bike Trail or walk the other way across the Twain Street traffic signal into Gardens Park. Peet's has another connection to the outdoors. It is located by The Las Vegas Cyclery. This adjacent proximity to the Las Vegas Cycled creates an unparalleled coffee patio environment that justified a half star increase. This deserves a separate paragraph. The adjacent Las Vegas Cyclery is a bicyclist destination that has indirectly created a coffee shop patio destination. The main attraction is a miniature landscaped bicycle and hiking trail that wraps around the building. This cute miniature trail includes the trail markers that you would see in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Essentially, the outdoor patio has a unique sense of place that symbolizes the outdoors. On a picturesque day, this is the perfect place to sip and savor Peet's Coffee. For newcomers it could be a slight challenge finding the place. It blends in with the low profile businesses at the northeast corner of The 215 and Town Center. It is easy to make the exact mistake that I made turning into the R.C. Wiley Shopping Mall on the south side of the 215. Lesson learned : it is by the Chevron immediately before the Twain Road traffic signal. On a Sunday morning this new coffee shop was fairly busy. I am certain that at nighttime it is dead. How do I know? It closes at 7 pm. On a fairly busy morning, I parked near the Chevron where the miniature trail starts. Before stepping foot in the building, I followed the trail around Peet's and a gym. This is my first experience following a miniature trail into a coffee shop. Inside this relatively roomy Peet's, I exchanged $2.70 for a medium cup of their Major Dickason blend coffee. It is a light roasted blend that is rich, smooth, and complex with a body of multi-layered taste. Here is an interesting fact. It is named after a Peetnik named Key Dickason. He was a retired Army Officer. I enjoyed Peet's to the point of getting a refill for $1.19. On the subject of Peetnik, this location currently does not accept the Peetniks reward card. According to the sign that I posted below, this is a partner location. The rate the customer service attitude as good. I did ask the obvious question that many Las Vegans have probably asked: Daniel. S: "Just curious, are they building any Peet's on the other side of town?" The Barista : "We are building one by UNLV." Daniel. S: "In UNLV." The Barista: "By Maryland Parkway." I spent a good hour and minutes here. Immediately afterwards, I capitalized on its location by taking a short walk into Gardens Park. Although I am not a Peetnik, I have a positive opinion of the brand. I am optimistic that it is a brand that will grow across the Las Vegas Valley.
