| - I stayed at the Howard Johnson on a recent three day stay in the Cleveland area. Based upon previous reviews, I booked the room, as it seemed to be a good value for the money.
Upon arrival, we pulled into the parking lot and were a bit worried. The place looked a bit rundown. We went into the lobby, and were pleasantly surprised with the decor/atmosphere. Upon checking in, they had no record of our reservation, that I had made three weeks prior to our arrival. I had our printed confirmation, as we booked through Kayak and the clerk said "I guess we can give you the rate they quoted you". Well, considering my card had already been charged, I would hope so! We got all checked in and headed to our room which was on the second floor facing the pool. The pool area was very run down, as were the stairs and the corridors leading to the rooms.
We got into the rooms, which were obviously newly remodeled, and were happy that they weren't shabby, unlike most of the rest of the hotel.
That night, we came back from dinner, only to see a couple having sex in the outdoor pool. We reported it to management, and they swiftly took care of it.
We left the next morning for a day of sight-seeing, and returned that evening. The maid had been to our room, although she did a mediocre job. The bed had been made but linens hadn't been changed. We had been under the impression they would be, and since the sheets on one bed were stained, we were hoping they would take care of it. The sink near the bathroom had stuff shoved down in it...hair, a bottle cap, and who knows what else, when we arrived, and apparently she didn't feel the need to clean that at all. So disgusting.
After returning from dinner that evening I inquired about check out time the following day. The clerk informed me that it would be 11am, but "if you need more time, just call and let us know and you can have until noon".
Unfortunately, the following morning when I called down to Let them know that we would need to extra hour, the same woman who I had spoken to the night before tried to charge me for another night! It was 10:45am, so my friend and I had to go without a shower, throw our stuff together in a hurry, and check out before 11. That was the last straw for me. I am usually not a complainer, but everything just kept adding up.
Also, I should note. They offer "Deluxe Continental Breakfast" each morning. I'm not sure about you, but bread, cereal, and warm apple juice is not what I'd call "deluxe".
When we arrived, the pool said "closed until further noticed". They reopened the pool the first night and when we took a swim we noticed the light for the pool had been pulled out, and the electric wires were hanging in the water. We promptly got out.
Overall, the price is a value based on only the location, and the fact that the rooms were nice enough. However, the customer service and misrepresentation of amenities/services would make me never patronize their establishment again
