| - We had been here last February for Valentines and loved every single thing about it - impeccable service, delicious food, strong drinks....fast forward to Thanksgiving with our family. 5 of us got the set "traditional" dinner of Turkey. Reasonably priced at $48 per person - for 3 courses. We had reserved well in advance, but still got stuck with the table right at the door of the dining room, in the middle of the room, with the hallway and wine wall as our backdrop - not exactly the best seat in the house - with staff buzzing by constantly. And the guy sitting to the side taking photos with a flash almost our entire meal - sorry dude that is RUDE, I feel like they should have told him, no flash photography, it was so annoying.
Our waitress was the same one we had in February and the place wasn't that full - so not sure why the service was so average. She really checked in like a waitress would at Dennys. And the other attendants were pretty negligent. My son ordered a bottle of sparkling wine and they only brought out 3 glasses, since 3 people spoke up, that they would have some - when I think they should have just given everyone a glass. They poured the 3 glasses and then put the bottle behind my son, out of his reach across the walk way and there it sat. We had 3 empty glasses most of the meal - and despite our repeated stares the staff just walked by - not serving the last of the wine until the end of the meal. My husband ordered the wine pairing with his meal and they were behind getting the wine out with each course and there was no explanation. At Valentines the wine steward came over each course and told us what we were drinking.
First course - the pumpkin quail soup - interesting - had a hard time figuring out the proper way to eat a whole quail sitting in the middle of the soup. When we did get a piece of quail meat off - it was yummy with the pumpkin soup, but the soup wasn't very hot, so it could have been much better. The soup bowls had a big lid that 3 out of the 4 servings had taken away when the soup was served, but one lid got left on the soup and we didn't know what to do with it. They never noticed this big white lid sitting on the table! It should have been removed. The rolls and bread here are FANTASTIC - we could have just eaten them and been very satisfied!
Turkey, stuffing, puree yams, mashed potatoes, and green beans - all were average - nothing exceptional - meat and stuffing were both dry and all my pieces had ribbons of fat through them. Never been a yam fan. Potatoes I love and these were just OK. Green beans were good. Gravy came on the side and again was not hot enough to make up for luke warm food. We mostly took our food home as it seemed a waste to not eat it, but no one was gobbling it down at the restaurant. My daughter had shrimp pasta - and the shrimp were giant - however they were like rubber! Auntie and brother both tried the shrimp and said - "no, not good" and took no more bites. The pasta and sauce were fine. Our ending with pumpkin tart was also not satisfying - but we all love a rich pumpkin pie and this was on the light side.
We might go back or maybe not - there are so many excellent restaurants in the city - and we loved the Barrymore the first time, but you only get one strike in this town and you are out. Sorry.
