| - Friday night, not enough food left at home to feed 3. It's Friday! We all wanted something different, delicious (healthy is optional). Yelp to the rescue.
THE PLACE: It's right in downtown Phoenix; SE corner of 1st Street and Roosevelt. I've lived in the Greater Phoenix area for over 10 years, but I can't say I'm familiar with the history of the area. The vibe to me, up and coming, beatnik. Lots of graffiti on the surrounding walls by the parking lot that it shares with other small establishments. Not vandal type but the good kind of graffiti. More artsy if you will. The restaurant is not really big, but it has ample seating inside and plenty of outdoor seating. The decor is very casual, with an industrial feel to it. Best part, right by the unisex restrooms is a wall of photos of dogs -- the barking kind. With endearing notes of who their loving mommies and daddies are. Quite cool. Oh, and before you take the correct turn to the restrooms, make the mistake of turning left and not regret it -- takes you to Mamma Toledo's Pies.
THE SERVICE: The server was friendly, helpful and happy to help with recommendations. The service was fast and efficient.
THE FOOD: I would recommend the Fried Pickles. Not a big fan of pickles? Don't knock it until you try it. Pickles tasted like they were a mix of sweet and dill dipped in delicious batter. Comes with 2 dips, ranch and chipotle. My daughter is a not a big fan of pickles, but you couldn't tell by watching her eat it. Hubby had the Mac Daddy -- mac n cheese, beef & bean chili, beef wiener. I had the Sunny -- grilled fruit, prosciutto, mixed greens, goat cheese, honey, chicken wiener. My baby girl had an Aiko - mango chutney, mayo and her selected wiener was a polish. What sets the experience a part? All are served on Naan versus your traditional hotdog bun. I looked at my plate of food, and thought I could have more than 1 for sure. Not so much! It was surprisingly filling. I was getting full, but it sure did not stop me from savoring every morsel and making sure none of my Sunny was left behind.
Definitely, coming back -- I want to try the Oliver next :)
