I stopped in today (3/19/10) to
a) see the straps on two handbags could be replaced or repaired
b) get a quote if they could.
Yes, he could replace them. No sewing on his part, remove and replace, but he had to order the leather strapping.
He quoted $38 for two prefab 10" straps on one bag
Quote for two prefab 12" straps was $44.
That would have been fine. If his sneering hadn't gotten in the way, that is. Bag #1 was a gift. Not an expensive bag, but it's from someone dear to me. It needs new straps. I don't need a lecture about it being from cheap material.
Bag #2 needs new straps and a scuff hidden as best as possible. If the bag had been shoes, I'd have asked him to use a matching polish, buff and shine. What I got was another "you moron" type lecture about some of the surface being missing.
I picked up my bags, headed for the door and as my foot exited, he called out "Maybe we shouldn't do business." --His last "one up" opportunity.
