| - "Are we really gonna be the people with a diaper shed?"
The above, from Modern Family, about sums up the Costco experience. My wife and I have been members since we shacked up, but I could count on one hand the number of times we have been here for serious shopping. I find most of their products to be merely okay, and when you are forced to buy them in bulk, you can often save money.
However, there are certain items worth coming in for:
- their cheese section is extensive and varied; you could find a lovely smoked gouda, a wheel of brie, or just a bag of Babybels to satisfy your dairy needs;
- the cereal selection is not huge, but the portions are, and when you find one you like (Nature's Valley Pumpkin seed flax, for example), it is worth stocking up - especially we whose primary staple food is cereal!
- the books are often the typical bestselling pap, but they are at wholesale price - and hence much lower that Chapters, so if you find that special Dan Brown illustrated edition you need to have, or Steve Jobs' bio, this is your best bet;
- the chocolate truffles during the holidays are LEGIT and incredible;
- and of course the samples! During a lengthy shopping trip with my parents as a kid, I ate solely the samples as my three meals, and it was glorious. And let's not forget the hot dogs: not sure what they put in them, but on our last trip I had two and I was full (like, completely satisfyingly full) for the rest of the day. And it was only three bucks!!
Actually, a Costco date might be a totally legitimate date...just avoid Saturday afternoons.
