| - Bought a Groupon for this place--$11 for $20 worth of goods. Would I have purchased the Groupon had I known about the owner's rather radical political/social stance at the time? Probably not. Now though, the irony of this business name is not wasted on me.
Came here for the donuts, period. Not because they're cute or because dessert shops are trendy or because I need to feed my non-existent "inner hippie" (as the sign out front suggests) but because, hey, I like donuts and rarely treat myself to one. Furthermore, PL&LD is located in the Strip District, one of my favorite spots.
In early April my husband and I redeemed our Groupon by selecting a couple bottled beverages and 15 donuts. The total came to $20.11, and the tax was waived. I liked that the tiny shop had photos posted to indicate flavors available at the moment; that really expedited the ordering process for us first-timers. The donut flavors that stood out to me as stellar were surprisingly the simpler ones--vanilla sprinkle and cinnamon-sugar, both excellent.
Customer service was also excellent.
A good number of people feel the donuts at PL&LD are pricey. Maybe they are, but don't forget to check local community magazines and booklets for coupons as well as websites like Groupon. That, and I recently moved back to the area after spending the better part of a decade in Southern California, where people are nutty enough to spend $4 for a cupcake, so about a buck per little donut doesn't seem so bad by comparison.
I'm going to resist getting too preachy here because I'd find it rather hypocritical for me to judge someone based on his/her, well, judgments. Still, given the owner's views the business name is undeniably messed up, isn't it? Purposefully ironic, perhaps. Anyway, I'd like to think there's more to the owner than the ignorant ass he seems to be.
All things considered, 3 stars. Maybe I'd come here again with a Groupon, coupon, or other form of discount.
