| - You really get the impression that the owner of this place isn't necessary running this business to make a huge profit. I think the owner truly just loves games and wants to share the love with as many people as possible. Everything in the store is fairly priced, and they only charge $2/person to play board games for as long as you want. The workers and the customers all seem passionate about whatever they're into, whether it be MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, or board games, and it really creates a fun environment. I do wish I had more time to dedicate to MTG to join some of these people.
I used to come here all the time when I was younger back when this place was actually located on 401 Yonge St. I used to travel down here all the way from Richmond Hill by myself as a grade schooler to buy packs of Pokemon cards because it was so much cheaper here. This was over 15 years ago and it's nice to see that their philosophy hasn't changed much since then.
But what they did change was the location and the sheer size of this place. It's huge now! And the place is more popular then ever! I guess now that board games and "nerd" culture are "in", there's been a huge wave of people starting to drop by on a regular basis. It's nice to see that people are now more open to these sorts of hobbies.
Despite the size of the store, everything is always well-organized and clean. Board games are always in proper alphabetical order, and there are always a lot of workers at the counter to help (although sometimes the store gets too packed for them to give you proper help). I will say though, sometimes you'll encounter a worker who can be a little socially awkward... Not in a shy kind of way, but they can be somewhat condescending if they think that you're not up-to-date with their "culture". I guess now that these types of things are popular, it's bound to inflate some people's egos.
I also had one encounter when playing board games where I had a guy come up to my group to ask us to be quiet - probably because he was busy concentrating on his MTG game. Theres clearly a sign that says that MTG can't be played in the board game room, and that should've been enforced by the workers. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to play Avalon quietly, so I just ignored his request and let him just give me dirty looks the entire time. Look buddy, MTG is separated from the board game rooms for a reason.
Despite these odd characters here and there, overall this place is great. It's always nice to drop by when you have some time to kill and it's fun watching people explore their passions in an open and (mostly) welcoming environment.
