I was born & raised Catholic, but generally attend Cornerstone for my place of worship. However, with my Mom visiting for the Holidays, we decided to attend Saturday evening Mass at the Newman Center because she prefers the traditional Catholic mass. It was beyond my expectations.
Parking was a little confusing- to find where to park in downtown Tempe near Mill right on campus. But the cathedral was BEAUTIFUL! Just gorgeous architecture and so peaceful inside- it brought back such fond memories and a comfort from home and my childhood growing up in the Catholic Church. I really appreciated the readings and the sermon the priest gave. It was real and heartfelt- not at all scripted or rehearsed. I am not sure what Sunday morning mass entails, but I wish they would have live music (a live piano player & vocalist) instead of recorded hymns during the mass. Live music can really make a difference in this setting, especially the melody of live piano keys & vocals, compared to a recording.
I highly recommend the Newman Center to anyone who is looking for a welcoming Catholic mass. Everyone was very kind and the atmosphere is perfect. Just a beautiful place and I am glad we attended the Saturday mass- this is a place I felt at home and would absolutely be driven to attend again.
