| - So, to look at me you'd think I'd never darkened the door of anything resembling an athletic establishment. I think my Jewish boss would describe me as zaftig; however I am more pragmatic and will just admit that I'm chubby. The excess adipose is largely diet-related though-the chocolate just finds me. I'm a regular in the gym despite all that and usually work away by myself.
I bought a group buy voucher for classes at DCC on a whim because I'd heard of the place and seen the website. At the time I was in no rush to change my routine so ended up using my voucher in a rush close to the expiry date. It turned out to be perfect timing as my routines were getting stale and I was losing enthusiasm. Steph was quick to answer all my emails and set me up for my first class!
The facility is great. They call it an athletic playground and that's pretty much what it looks like. Assuming you actually like to exercise, that is. There's turf in the centre with a hill, a section with weights, kettlebells and benches, an area with a cushioned floor and a dedicated area for Olympic lifting. They have many, many toys: ropes to climb, tires to flip, gorgeous Eleiko bars and weights, hurdles, kettlebells, bands. Pretty much everything.
Their class range is great! They tend to have early morning, lunchtime and evening classes-a mixture of bootcamps, female body sculpting, strength and power and high intensity conditioning. The bootcamps are G, PG and R rated. They've also rated the other classes-unsurprisingly, the high intensity conditioning is rated R!
My first class was the general bootcamp (rated PG) with Jimmy. I felt a bit lost at first just wandering over to the white board where people were congregating. He was friendly and cheery though and put us through a challenging workout of sprints, suicides, kettlebell swings, med ball jackknifes and the dreaded burpees. I left exhilarated! Second class was advanced bootcamp (rated R) with Blaise. It was a ton of fun. We were split up into small groups and ended up doing things like dragging a weight plate up the turf, band-assisted pullups, kettlebell swings, pushups, jumping in and out of a tire...and burpees. I did a general bootcamp with him the week after and it was completely different again and also fun. Pushups, pushing a plate, jumping. And of course burpees!
My favourite class was my final one-strength and power with Jimmy. He looked a bit doubtful when I turned up, explaining that it was focusing on Olympic lifts. I admitted that I was a beginner but said I'd love to learn some technique and he was fabulous. He was incredibly sweet and patient and would come to me, give me tips/pointers/corrections and then leave me to practice by myself. I really felt that I improved over the course of the hour. I would absolutely love to go again.
Notes:
-Bathrooms are small but clean and nice with 2 shower stalls, shower gel, hairdryer etc
-They provide towels. Yay!
-You leave your bag in a shelving unit on the floor so you can always keep an eye on it
-Bootcamp classes can be big. There were 17 or 18 in some of mine. The class is capped at 20 but the large size means that you won't be getting much personal attention. The strength and power classes are smaller
-It would have been nice if they'd asked who was new at the start of the classes and asked us how we felt after/gave feedback. Or maybe that's just me wanting to be graded all the time!
-They say that membership is approximately 50:50 male:female. The bootcamps tended to have a female predominance though (less noticeable in the advanced class) and the strength and power class was predominantly male.
-They have a variety of membership options including:
Class membership - $119 per month, fitness membership - Play in the Lair (gym access to do your own workout) - $99 (but $75 until July 31st, 2012) and unlimited membership - $150 per month. I think there may be a class card option too but I'm waiting to hear from them about it.
As for me? I hope they have some kind of class card option. I want to go back!
