  • This is a hard review because I really wanted to give them 1 star, but at the end of the day I had the perfect cut and a good shave. I moved to Phoenix in November and have been blessed with finding awesome barbers wherever I have lived, be it Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, Berlin, Dubai, and various places I have travelled give or take, but here in Phoenix it's been so hard - either the shop sucks, the barber sucks, or theres something about the place that I just don't want to get my services completed with them. I saw that The Local Barber & Shop was rated 5 stars on Yelp and received rewards around Phoenix, but I also know that many barbers in Phoenix suck, so the chances of being rated number one are easier than other places. I know a lot of barbers and apparently the local school in Phoenix is trying to kill the barber trade and focus on Stylists. Believe me, we don't need stylists, we need awesome barbers. To the point, I have never received an awesome fade and old school shave by a white guy, not that they're not out there, it's just that I haven't experienced one and in addition they seem to have an attitude on most occasions. It's always been latin or arab/middle eastern guys who have done an awesome job with my cut and shave. I mentioned this when I called but the owner wasn't available nor were the latin guys, but they said me up with Jared, the guy had a huge attitude and was getting impatient because I was pulling up some photos of cuts I have had that I liked and he say's, "I don't need to see photos, I am a great barber and I will give you a cut and you will like it." I immediately was like no, I don't like your attitude and walked out. Called to rebook with someone else and the owner seemed annoyed about my comments that I prefer a latin barber. I go in the next day and am with Jesse. Jesse did an awesome job but he doesn't really talk, so much I am not sure if he's hard of hearing. I even dropped my phone and asked if he or I could grab it and he just kept cutting until the shop owner came by and grabbed it for me. The shave turned out good, but the experience wasn't as relaxing as many barbers I have been too. I saw a guy walk in and the owner wanted to place him with Jared and you could tell the guy wasn't cool with it and the owner is reassuring him that he's a great barber and he say's, how long have you been here, what? like a month or two, and Jared say's a few weeks now. Well the day before when I complained about Jared the owner said he's never had any complaints, that I was the first to complain, well it's only been a few weeks, no wonder. I came up to pay and all of a sudden Jesse started talking to the owner and I had a question/compliment about his mirror and tool counters and the owner just answers my question in a few seconds and cuts me off and continues talking about whatever he and Jesse were talking about. I noticed from the car to the clothes to the shop that the owner has some success under his belt, and hey I have a high-end car and nice items as well, I think it's a great testament to success, but at the same time it felt un-wanted, it felt so impersonal and I didn't want to come back, but at the same time I know it's the only barber shop in Phoenix that can probably give me what I need when I am home in the metro. Jesse is a great barber, I just suggest a better shaving experience and that the owner doesn't come off so impersonal. Maybe they were annoyed about my comments that latin barbers are better and that I called out Jared for being rude the first day I went in the shop, I don't know but I will be going in a couple of weeks and hope I can update this that I felt much more welcomed and wanted in their shop, because my first two times it didn't feel that way.
