| - We've been going to Ra since my daughter was 6 years old - a family tradition. The best quality here in AZ was at the Kierland location, but they closed that down so we started driving to the one in north Scottsdale that became its replacement. Might be a management thing, but the quality's gone down since that closure. Or maybe that was the time of the corporate buyout. At any rate, we have stopped going as often. Overall the restaurant just went downhill. Family favorites like the tunacado have really suffered - the tuna used to be SO fresh and of such high quality - truly memorable. Now it's the same tuna you can find at any corner sushi bar.
But the clincher is this .... my daughter's home from college and we went to Ra for old time's sake last weekend. I ordered what has always been the star of the menu, the Hamachi Kama (I know, it's not sushi, but it was AMAZING), only to be told it's been taken off the menu.
Big misstep for Ra... just one of many but this last one was sort of the nail in the coffin. At this point there is no reason to go to Ra anymore. Hamachi Kama was the last thing they did truly well - the item that set them apart from the other 50+ sushi joints in this big city. Sure, others have it, but no one does it quite like Ra did - sizable, fresh, broiled to a beautiful crisp without overcooking the center, and the sauce they served it up with was unique and stellar. Good enough to cause cravings... why would they eliminate the last great thing on the menu?
Disappointing to see this trajectory, but it looks like it's goodbye to Ra after all these years.
