| - Has Press changed their management?
I was there last in December 2011 with a friend to celebrate our birthdays. We had a great server who was able to recommend different wines and items on the menu. The atmosphere was fun, laid back with some character. I felt you could go there for a casual night out, but you could also dress up and stop in before heading out uptown. We ordered sushi, hummus, edamame, wine, and finished off with a chocolate fondue. I had a great experience and raved about to my friends afterwards.
I went back tonight with a couple girlfriends. We were looking for the type of night I had last time I was there. Nothing crazy. Laid back, but fun for a girl's night. When we walked in, I noticed immediately the change in decor and feeling. I felt like there was a lack of character and there was a lot of generic artwork on the walls. Our server, though nice, was fairly new and was not able to give us any recommendations to wine or food. We were given take out menu pamphlets and informed that the menu may not be correct because someone had mixed up the old and new menu items. My friend, who is knowledgeable in wine walked around to find us a nice bottle to share. She was given little direction to where the types of wines were on the wall.
From the appetizers page we ordered roasted garlic, roasted almonds, the pretzel with Dijon mustard. I ordered the salmon avocado roll and one of my friends ordered a pizza.
We were a majority of the way through our wine before any food was ever brought out. We were one of 3 tables when we first ordered our food and a couple other tables came in after us so it was not because they were bombarded with orders. The roasted garlic was burnt, my roasted almonds were not roasted and were cold, and the pretzel still had not shown up. Management did bring out a new garlic once we complained. When I asked about my almonds and whether or not they were roasted, I was told they are bought roasted and that they heated them back up to bring out the natural oils. The almonds were cold and covered in olive oil. We were eating, basically, greasy nuts. The soft pretzel finally came out 15-20 minutes after everything else, including the pizza and sushi. It was the only thing that was brought out hot. Yes, even the pizza was cold.
The pretzel, sushi, and pizza were good, but nothing I would go back to have again. When the bill came, we were overcharged for the bottle of wine and waited a while for them to figure out a way to correct it.
If it wasn't for the company I had, this night would have been a bust. The combination of the lack of timely service, attention, and good food, left me disappointed. I felt the complete opposite of how i felt 7 months ago.
