  • Extremely disappointed with our experience due to the rave reviews from a handful of my mama friends. We were told that this office is fairly holistic and very breastfeeding friendly...we did NOT find that to be true. Perhaps it is simply the doctor we dealt with who made our experience memorably awful. Dr. Sandra Romero was on call with Healing Hearts when our son was born and paid him a visit in the hospital (Mercy Gilbert). She began her visit by looking at his nether region and telling us that it was abnormal and he would have to see a urologist at six months for a circumcision....that HH wouldn't do this routine procedure before we left the hospital. The worst part was how hard she pushed us to feed him formula due to his slightly low/boarderline blood sugar. My husband and I made it VERY clear verbally and in our birth plan that we did not want any formula, as I planned to solely breastfeed and we didn't want to confuse him or complicate the journey. We agreed to a sugar water IV drip since they had already inserted an IV. Even after our son's glucose level was well within the normal range, she still pushed formula and went as far as to verbally guilt me about my milk production (which a lactation consultant praised for only two days post-partum) and asked if I cared about my son's health. We felt that she was rude, impatient and did not provide adequate reasoning for her recommended actions. If we had not had the support of a doula and medical advice of another doctor and our midwife, my husband and I would have felt very defeated, bullied and likely caved in. I am so glad that we stood our ground for the sake of our baby. We switched pediatrician offices immediately upon being discharged and during our first visit at the new office, two doctors looked at his privates and said it was completely normal (performed circumcision, in-office the next week) and that there was no reason for them to check blood glucose due to his weight, feeding schedule and the amount of dirty diapers. We were also told that blood sugar is best improved and checked based on his normal feedings long-term, which do not include sugar water or formula...which we pointed out to Dr. Romero numerous times. It is too bad that you can't choose which doctor would be looking after your baby in the hospital because our story could be much different with a more compassionate doctor who considers family wishes and determines common sense medical care for your newborn. Just remember that this is your journey and your child. As long as your actions don't endanger your child, you have a choice of treatments. Good luck!
