I just recently graduated from this school and my overall experience was just okay. They do try hard to maintain there reputation as the number one school in the Phoenix area but fall a little short in some aspects. The tuition is expensive and doesn't include fees for state boards but unlike other schools in the area, you can set up a payment plan, graduate and take state boards even if you haven't fully paid the tuition. That's where the bulk of the star rating comes from. The curriculum is padded with fluff and unnecessary-ness. They spend an inordinate amount of time on details that will not matter when you take state boards. Each instructor lectures and demonstrates skills in a different way. Skills are also demonstrated differently in the online videos. The externship site was a poor choice and some of the CNAs that work there aren't what I would call professional or nice, not to students and certainly not to the residents. For a school with AMTI's reputation, you would think that they would partner with better facilities. Before going to clinicals, you have to complete an assignment. They give you a scenario, and a disease and ask questions that have to do with that situation. Beware the answers you give. The nurse who graded mine didn't know what diabetic nephropathy was. I question a nurse who has forgotten even the most basic of medical terminology or can't use Google to quickly figure it out.
The reason that I chose this school is because I took a CNA class last year but was unable to finish. For the curious, no I didn't fail. I was passing that class. I passed this one too. I retained a lot of knowledge from that first go round and I've already taken a lot of advanced coursework. So this was not hard for me. I would say that if this is your first foray into the healthcare field, this school might be beneficial to you and you'd probably get more out of it than I did. It met my needs in that it allowed me to get the piece of paper I needed to take state boards. I actually went to AZ Western College in Yuma to take boards because they had an earlier date. I passed. But when I went to look up my registration number a few days later, one hadn't been assigned to me because my lawful presence hadn't been verified. Schools are supposed to do this when you enroll. I had to get out of bed and take my documents to the board of nursing. The school didn't help and couldn't explain what had happened nor did they seem interested in finding out. In fact, I was told to call them if I found out what went wrong. Seriously?!!! Minor hiccup but inconvenient and annoying.
Overall they score a solid three stars. They are not what I would consider the best but to be sure there are worse choices out there.
