I landed at PHX late at night so luckily, I didn't encounter all the normal hustle and bustle of an airport. The airport is pretty large, clean and modern-looking. My favorite thing about the airport is the rental car facility. Like other airports such as McCarran, they have a huge car rental facility away from the terminals, so far that you have to catch a shuttle. Shuttle buses constantly make stops right outside of baggage claim to bring you to the huge car rental area. The facility is huge and so convenient because all of the rental car companies are under one roof, unlike Honolulu where you have to look and wait for a certain company's bus and catch that particular shuttle to their office because every single rental car company has a different lot.
One minor mishap and one major mishap made my visit really memorable. The minor thing that happened was that while waiting for our baggage at baggage claim, the luggage got stuck at the top of the "slide" where they come down to the conveyor belt. It wasn't a big deal because an awesome Hawaiian Airlines (go HA!) employee went in to unclog the luggage. Problem solved, we didn't wait too long for our luggage.
The major mishap and our "welcome" to Phoenix was when we arrive to the car rental facility, there was a huge fight that just broke out on the sidewalk. Security got there quickly to break it up and called the police. Our shuttle driver who was obviously concerned for our safety didn't open the bus doors until the fight broke up and the security got there. I have no idea where in the world those people were from but boy do they know how to welcome people to Phoenix!
Other than the holdup at baggage claim and the fight right outside of the rental car facility, my short visit to PHX was great. I have no complaints about the facility and found it easy to navigate around the huge airport. I hope when I return next year, my visit is less eventful.
