Pittsburgh is blessed to have a ton of great bakeries. Two of the top are Bethel and Oakmont.
I prefer Oakmont as I grew up on it. I recently got to try some donuts from Bethel Bakery during a employee appreciation breakfast at work. The glazed donut I had was amazing! It was so light and fluffy but still delicious.
One Saturday with Bethel Bakery on my mind I grabbed my girls and we made the 40 minute trek to Bethel Bakery. Once inside I made a b line to the self help donut case. There were only three kinds of donuts left. One filled with cherries, one filled with butter cream and a pretzel shaped donut. Mind you it was only 11am in the morning. Oakmont Bakery would still be fully stocked at 11 am on a Saturday morning. If you know your donuts sell, make more! Business 101! The place is small and if it's packed it can be rather tight.
So not wanting to disappoint my wife and daughter I did get a couple of each as to not make the trip a total bust. I just wish I had known that there were more of the three kinds of donuts left behind a glass case that could have been boxed up for me instead of me putting them in a bag and most of the filling oozing out before we even made it to the car to eat them. The donuts were good but, not worth the trip.
I wish they would have had more gourmet type cupcakes like Oakmont does. I saw at least 22 different kinds of gourmet cupcakes on their website but, there were none to be found during our visit. I guess you have to get there when they open at 7am otherwise forget about it! It would have been nice if they had a small seating area where you can eat your treats or something but, no, nothing. I must say though that the girl that waited on us was very nice and friendly.
At least I did get to try Frisch's broasted chicken since they are close by so the trip wasn't a total waste of time. South Hills, you can keep Bethel Bakery. I'll stick to Oakmont Bakery any day!
