I recently found myself back in the neighborhood after moving to the east end a couple of years ago. I decided to pop into the Jekyl and Hyde which was a regular spot for me when I lived in the complex above the bar. Wow what a difference! They have newly renovated the entire place and it looks like a completely new restaurant. the seating, pool tables, bar area and lighting is very modern looking and quite stylish. My good feelings quickly turned to disappointment when I discovered the same cook working in the kitchen as before. I have had bad food experiences with him cooking in the past and learned quickly never to eat there when he was on shift (I would always ask in advance) nor did I eat this time which was disappointing because I was rather peckish. I also noticed that the name on the menus is different than the sign outside. I questioned this and was told the sign was on back order. So I guess the place is now called "The Bond" not Jekyl and Hyde. To me this wasn't nearly as much of an issue as the prices of the food/drinks when I did open the menu. I think I saw one drink on the menu at $17(!) and domestic beer is $7 (Bud Blue). Seems very steep considering the location. I've been to pubs and bars in downtown core and club district that have $5 beer specials from 4-7 and apparently "The Bond" has no beer specials at all. When I walked in the place was nearly empty except for a table in the middle of the bar of what looked like 4-5 regulars. Strange considering this was right at the height of what should have been the dinner rush between 5-7.
Overall the decor may look slick but it seems like the owners are trying to make this more of a Gastro-Pub than the friendly local watering hole that it once was. Guess they should start by getting a new cook and putting some drink/food specials on. Perhaps then business may pick up. I hear Kariaoke still brings in the hoards every Friday and Saturday so that is maybe what pays the bills.
