  • The "architect" before his time was an innovator of home design. Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) preferred residential design, particularly using materials that worked in harmony with the natural world. FLW loved nature and did not want to disrupt the natural landscape. He designed with natural lighting bringing the prescience of the outdoors into the home spaces and rooms. FLW purchased 1-square mile of pristine desert in the late 30's., now neighboring Scottsdale, AZ. Taliesin was a wilderness--maybe 20 miles from the nearest structure or town. With his apprentices labor (FLW was in his 70's at this time and at that age did half of his life's work until age 90) he built the Taliesin complex "mano a mano" hand by hand! Unbelievable! For REAL! Most all materials in the structure, like rocks and boulders were harvested on his land. Steel and lumber had to be procured. Wow! Lots of work work work! But FLW had ideas and a gift to give and why the apprentices were willing to learn and sacrifice for his techniques. FLW was a slave driver! Taliesin West was the ultimate live-work space (a half century before the idea was coined), consisting of engineering & drafting rooms, the comprehensive living quarters with guest rooms for his staff and visitors coming to contract with him on his design ideas. There is a theatre, performance hall and dining room to entertain guests. FLW knew he had to sell himself and ideas by connecting--partying with clients. His apprentices wore tuxedo's and served food every friday night and entertained guests too. FLW was also teaching them to be social by night as they slaved by day working design. Every detail had purpose in its form and function at Taliesin. Shapes of the structures followed the natural landscape. Design was minimalistic and simple lines yet elegant in its purpose and look. You got to see it to appreciate it! You will see his ideas in this home that are n all homes today (like recessed lighting) he could have patented but put his energy in design time. It is a mind blowing tour! See the complex and get the facts from a guided tour / docent. Fascinating! Whether you like looking at homes or not or are not an FLW fan, you can appreciate FLW's accomplishments. This is not ordinary ... simply extraordinary! Do not miss this tour!
