  • A little while back, I was on a great first date with my current girlfriend. In our clicking-so-well haste, we opted to drive until we found a dive bar, and go in for food and drinks. Pretty risky stunt for a first date, but we were up to the task. Next thing we knew, we were darkening Britannia's doorway. Located at the ass-end of a pretty drab looking strip-mall, there is nothing particularly distinguishing about this place. The gated patio is made up of a few chairs and appears to be pretty cramped. A couple of people were sitting out there, and gave off a 'We are people-watching, but where are the people?' vibe. The interior is your typical sport-savvy dimly lit dive. To your immediate right is a room which appears to have been a smoking room once upon a time, but also has a pool table and seems to serve as a game room now. The main area consists of 3 rows of booths, and a bar at the back of the room. The place was very clean, and we took a seat at a booth near the exit. The patrons were interesting. They definitely allowed us to Simon Pegg analyze them, ala Shaun of the Dead (and I'd like to think they did it back to us). They definitely appeared to be products of their environment: Sport-savvy, strip-mall-ey, and a few of them seemed a little dimly lit as well. Granted, some of them were chatting, but others were simply parked at their stool, eyes-forward, backs to the outside world, and were clearly die-hard regulars. Our drinks were reasonably priced, and we decided to share a plate of nachos, to which our very friendly waitress brought us in a timely fashion. They were surprisingly delicious and filling! Between the 2 of us, we came close to finishing it, but it stuffed us both. When it came time to pay, their ATM didn't like me one bit, and kept denying me precious fundage. I ended up having to use my debit at the bar to settle the tab, which is fine, if odd. It also allowed a mustached-girl at the end of the bar to stare at me. Not smile. Not flirt or say hi. Stare. Um...yeah. My girl experienced a similar phenomenon on her way to the Ladies room, and shared when she returned. So that was that. A couple of drunken weirdos and a special-needs ATM aside, this was a clean, quiet, modestly-priced pub with great food.
