| - I had a thoroughly positive experience. I took their 8 hour CCW course and it was excellent. Both instructors were very good teachers and knowledgeable on the topic. They answered everyone's questions with facts, experience and even a bit of humor. There was obviously some biased commentary about political situations (e.g. "they're going to take all our guns away" hysteria) but c'mon, it's a gun shop.
Afterward, we talked with one of the store employees named James about handguns and what to consider if we wanted to own one. We were novices who were now educated from the CCW class. James was very knowledgeable and fully embraced the situation without making us feel stupid. He helped us lay out a budget based on everything he suggested we should consider. Absolutely no pressure to buy anything at the time. We left without purchasing anything.
We returned the next day and luckily were able to talk to James again. We were now interested in making a purchase. Not only did we revisit all of the options we discussed the day before, he went way over and above the call of duty to show how the various options would actually work and affect our use of a gun. He fully demonstrated everything. He did all of this without applying any pressure to buy anything. He gave us a lot of information and allowed us to choose. His approach was realistic to our situation. Again, never made us feel stupid. Before we left after about an hour of all of this support and advice, he made sure we knew how to load and unload the gun by having us do it in front of him (with blanks, not real bullets).
I see other people mentioning inflated prices. Even if we did end up paying a little more, the stellar customer service leaves me with no regrets. This was a very serious decision and we needed help to make it. James made us feel comfortable and confident with our decisions.
I have read several other reviewers mention that they experienced employees who were rude, insensitive and had unpleasant attitudes. We didn't experience any of that but we dealt with about four different people and all of them were young (say 21-25 years old). However, I do see the potential for that kind of experience. I did watch at least one employee who seemed a little full of himself and, for the record, he was older (45-55). We want to go back and actually practice shooting. We're going to be novices and new to the whole experience so I hope we don't encounter rude or obnoxious people. I hope that we continue to experience the people who are trying to be helpful and provide positive guidance.
I'll come back and update this review if I end up encountering any of that but as for these initial experiences, I give Scottsdale Gun Club and especially James a well deserved 5 stars.
