| - ***Updated review***
In my initial review I noted the presence of bugs at our table. After I wrote the review, I learned that at the time there was a large presence of midge flies in Cleveland, which are the bugs I describe. I'm leaving the original review but added a star. I'll also note on a subsequent visit, there were no bugs at all.
***end update***
Things started out well when my girlfriend suggested we try Collision Bend brewing company in the flats. I made reservations online, requesting a table with a view of the water (it's right on the river (this will come back to haunt me later)). Getting there was easy, and we were able to find parking close by. Though that is probably because it was a Wednesday night.
Once inside, expectations were being met. It is very nice inside, a little more high end than I expected, but I liked it. It was pretty crowded for a Wednesday night. They accommodated my request for a table with a view of the river, which was both great and sucked. It's a nice view, but there were a lot of bugs on the window. Like, a lot. Gorgeous occupied herself with killing them for a bit, but even her indefatigable energy was eventually spent in her ultimately futile efforts to get us a less bug filled dinner.
I'll say this, the bugs had the common courtesy to stay on the window. As far as I know, nary a one came onto my plate. Though they were probably just fearful of my murderous girlfriend. (so they are smart bugs, we know that)
There was a full bottle of water on the table, which is always worth a star in my book. I like to be hydrated.
For drinks, I had a Saison and gorgeous ordered a sampler flight. The Saison was good, but in full disclosure, I am not a beer connoisseur. My main go-to is Miller Light. Labett light is about as fancy as I get with beer, so I don't really have much to say about how good the beer was other than the price seemed in line with what one would expect.
The small plates seem to have a good variety of interesting items, a little more so than the large plates, in my opinion. We each got two tacos, Gorgeous with Jerk Chicken and Fish, myself with pulled beef and pork (I like to pull it) with the intention of splitting them, as well as the popcorn.
I guess because they were all small plates, it is not unreasonable to bring them all out at once, but I would have liked the popcorn to come out first. No big deal really.
The tacos are $8 and you get one. It is a pretty big taco. $16 for two makes for a substantial dinner. The tacos looked great when they came out, unfortunately that was the high point. The jerk chicken, pulled beef and pulled pork all tasted very similar. The pork has jalapenos, which was the way I could tell which taco I was eating. While they looked great, I was underwhelmed with the taste. The pulled beef and jerk chicken in particular were very bland.
Service was attentive and the inside is nice. The view is great, but they need to do something to control the insect population. The food though is average and for the price and being a Zach Bruell restaurant, disappointing. I'd go back for a drink, but probably not dinner.
