  • I stopped in today for their Yin Yang class. After having a slight meltdown yesterday, I was in need of some chilling. That said, I was also in need of some work and after reading the description of this class on the website, I thought it would be the perfect cure. The location is exceptional. The studio is located in a lovely old building right on College and Yonge (above Starbucks). If you were any closer to the ttc, you may be on it. It is, as mentioned below, on the 3rd floor of said lovely old building, but there is a (slightly ricketty looking) elevator available. I took the stairs (I have a questionably irrational fear of becoming stuck in an elevator). Very easy to find, directly right of the staircase, as is the reception area. I enjoyed HAVING reception there; she directed me to the change room (not horribly small, but I wasn't a fan of that curtain) and the washrooms which I wasn't terribly pleased about having to leave the studio for. And then come back to collect the key. They were very welcoming and very happy to let me utilize my passport to prana; I haven't yet had a bad experience with it, but am always wondering a little bit! The studio was BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely stunning. I'll admit, I'm an art deco architecture junky, so of course I fell in love with the gigantic room with vaulted ceilings. The only negative of this kind of place: the air circulation was dismal. Fans lined the ceiling but weren't on despite the mid-day time, and the only slightly opened windows weren't helping much either. A friend used to go here (who admits he's "kind of sweaty" when not doing anything) stopped because he would get way to hot, and this was in the winter. I get it now. And the class itself: normally taught by Charlene, it was being substituted for the month of July. At the beginning of the class, there seemed to be somewhat of a "lecture"; a revision of the discussion of the month on Gurus. I was not aware of a lecture of the month... Albeit a little lost, I did take what I could and certainly thought of my own mentors/"gurus" while she spoke. The practice was EXACTLY what I needed, though! At times, we were flowing quite fast, and then this was broken up by holding our positions for 3-5 breaths, allowing time to sink into them, adjust, and debrief. The instructor was also quite helpful in repositioning; she made her way to all the students at least once to help adjust and bring extra supplies (bolistors, blankets, etc) as needed. I would have liked a few more balance-ey postures, though. I guess I'll just have to hang out in tree while I cook my dinner tonight. So the PROS - great mixture of restorativeish and active practice. - awesome location, awesome studio The CONS - better utilization of those big fans on hot summer days - including that the class includes ongoing discussion in the description would have been helpful. It didn't necessarily take away from the class, but it would have been nice to know in advance.
