  • In my search for a great cannoli, I spotted this when I was passing through central Mississauga. I happened to pop in right at lunch time and there wasn't a lot of activity at all. The back door to the baking area was open and it looked like 2 ladies were working on a big fondant covered cake. Though I wasn't close to it, from afar, it didn't look like the best cake. The edges were rounded instead of a crisp line and the fondant looked lumpy in other parts. The bakery had 3 areas. Open shelves sparsely filled with pies, bread, and some baked goods. The front portion was filled with many types of cookies that were iced in a variety of colours and shapes. And off to the left side was a sparely filled refridgerated glass counter of the mini cakes and pastries. Nothing really interested me too much on the pies and bread area. The prices weren't outrageous so if I were really interested in a croissant or bun, it might not be a bad place to try. I zero'd in on the cannolis. They had 3 types... the true sicilian with chocolate chips, the custard filled one, and a chocolate custard filled one. I asked if they were freshly made and the lady mentioned they were made that morning. I purchased the sicilian and the chocolate one. I also happened to see a tiramisu and bought that as well. And for good measure, I grabbed a flakey 'ricotta' filled roll (according to the baker, it's a cross between cannoli and a sweet crispy pastry... sounded great at the time). I got home and started to try things. I will say that the baker was right on being filled that morning. The cannoli shells were still crunchy and crispy. They had great texture. It's a bit on the thick side but I didn't mind it too much. The problem was the taste! Though the shells had a nice crunch, they really didn't taste too much like anything... and the sicilian is supposed to be filled with ricotta, powdered sugar, and chocolate chips. It tasted more like plain whipped cream. It was too light for ricotta and I really didn't detect the chocolate. The chocolate filled cannoli was a bit better as the filling was sweeter so it had a taste but it tasted more like a pudding mix instead of a custard. This wasn't what I was hoping for! As for the other 2 items, the tiramisu was one of the better ones I've had in Mississauga. I wouldn't say it was great but a decent piece as it had decent coffee flavour and the ladyfingers were nicely moistened but not soggy. The flakey pastry cannoli frakensteined baby was just ok. True to her word, it was flakey but like the cannoli, it lacked flavour. As for service, it was just 'ok'. I felt like I burdened baker sometimes when I asked what was what and the prices (there are ZERO prices listed in the refridgerated places). I wouldn't be surprised she did the occasional eye roll when I wasn't looking. I wouldn't really return to this place as my list of places to try in MIssissauga is as long as Yonge St or the Costco gas bar line up (that's another review upcoming) .
