| - "The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls."
-- Pablo Picasso
I've always had a great time at the Tempe Festival of the Arts. It had been several years since I was at the last one, and I liked the changes that they put in place. At each of the main entry points there was a map and a directory of booth names so it would be easier to navigate through. There were also more options for food, with a food truck alley selling unique and tasty items, including one of my favorite food trucks, The Maine Lobster Lady.
Some of the vendors included those selling paintings, prints, jewelry, glass art, copper/metal sculptures, ceramics, clothing, and pet supplies. I also enjoyed the booths selling jarred/bottled goods such as pickled garlic and balsamic vinegar.
For the most part all the vendors were really friendly and willing to talk about their booth. Most of the artists here don't mind if you take photos (After all, they're trying to get you to buy their items and get their name out). I always think it's odd for some artists to be so peeved at people taking photos of their art. I totally understand the risk of intellectual property theft, but I feel it is a double edged sword. If you want to become well known and famous, there are going to be people out there that will probably inevitably copy you simply by having your art exposed to the world, but that is one of the risks you take. There was a booth whose art I really wanted to take a photo of to show how amazing the artist was, with the goal to inspire others to buy his photos and prints but I was yelled at when I brought out my phone and started aiming it at one of his photographs. I think I was more annoyed that he was so harsh about it. Oh well he can stay anonymous forever then lol.
Parking is a pain. It's downtown Tempe, so that's to be expected. Most of the lots were full when we went on a Friday late morning/afternoon, and the only close by lot that was open was $15 for event parking. We did end up finding some street parking a few blocks away luckily.
While this event doesn't exclude dogs from being at the festival, they do state that it is not recommended to bring your dog. I contemplated bringing my pups, but I'm glad I didn't because it was a pretty warm day which would have been too hot for them walking around for so long, especially on the asphalt the booths were set up on.
