I've seen the signs for the farmer's market and finally went a few Saturdays ago. It's a charming market and what I like best is the different local businesses that are there such as MunMun Thai Snacks; Pennybun's Mushrooms and a few others. These 2 stood out for me as I love mushrooms and the desserts MunMun was serving up was reminiscent of some of my childhood snacks as they involved coconut and rice. MunMun had Mango Sticky Rice, Thai Iced Milk Tea and Thai Mini Crepes. I definitely recommend the Thai Iced Milk Tea, It is a black tea sweetened with a little sugar and condensed milk. I only had samples of the desserts and the mango sticky rice is interesting. The desserts are not overly sweet and definitely not what a North American palate would consider dessert but try them and see for yourself. Pennybun's Mushrooms had fresh Chanterelles, Oyster, lobster, Shitake, Hedgehog, Cauliflower, PomPom and Bear's Head Tooth Mushroom. They don't carry all of them all the time (especially the wild ones as it depends on what they find). They offer a tasting box for $20 which will include a bit of each of most of the fresh mushrooms they have that day.
There are also fresh produce vendors, soap vendors, Japanese sushi and soup vendor. It is a small market but interesting. I love the community markets as these are often the starting point of many local businesses. The outdoor Saturday Farmer's Market is over but the Wednesday nights ones will continue so check it out and see for yourself. The vendors vary from week to week, there are the regulars but some like MunMun and Pennybun's Mushrooms may not be there all the time. Check out MunMun on Facebook and Pennybun's website http://www.pennybunsmushrooms.ca/ to see where they will be. They may also be at a community farmer's market near you.
