| - I should start this review by saying I never write reviews on Yelp but knowing how hard it is to pick a dog trainer, I felt I should report how great our training was with Bob.
We finished our four week training last week and we are so glad we chose to go with All American and Bob. We have two rescue dogs. One is a 5 year old Boxer and the other is a 7 year old Golden. They were decent listeners and pretty good on walks (or so we thought) but they both got very feisty when we saw other dogs and would pull and jump and bark. They aren't aggressive, just very excited about other dogs. But, they would pull us down the block and into the street and put us in potentially unsafe situations. As a result, we decided to work with Bob (after a lot of research!).
We were a little unsure of using the e-collar (much like other reviewers) but we tried it on ourselves and realized it is more of an attention getter than a painful shock. The first training day was a little stressful. Our golden threw a complete temper tantrum and it was really hard to watch. He was acting like we were torturing him, even when he wasn't being "nicked" by the collar. He looked like a kid in the grocery store that was not allowed to buy the sugar cereal he wanted. He kept throwing himself on the ground, rolling around, crying, and trying to push off the collar. We wanted to make sure people knew this could happen, and you have to be strong and push through it, because he really was just being a spoiled kid. In the past, he always walked in front of us and led the walk but now he was being taught to heel and he did not like being told how and where to walk.
It was also really hard to "nick" our little Boxer girl because she would look afraid and confused but she didn't act out like our Golden. She is the little baby in the family so it was hard to do the nicking but we did when it was necessary. She was really the feisty, jumpy one with other dogs and even though she was being friendly, she would approach other dogs and punch them in the face (she is a Boxer:). But, it made it hard on walks to control her. After the first training day though, we had completely different dogs! It really was amazing. They walked next to us instead of walking us and behaved when we saw another dog.
We found it was important to be consistent with the collar and to use it on every walk. We normally walk our dogs three times a day so they get lots of practice. After a while, we found we barely had to use the collar (even though we keep them on) except at occasional times. We are still working with them and will have to do so for a while but our walks are so much easier and calmer. Our neighbors have all noticed how well behaved they have become and are really impressed.
Bob's training really works wonders! We have well behaved dogs that walk next to us calmly, will sit and stay without moving when we walk away, and will come and heel when called. They don't freak out and go crazy when they see other dogs (or cats and rabbits) and we can walk without holding their leashes and they stay next to us. They may never be perfect since they are older dogs, but the difference in their behavior is day and night and we are completely satisfied.
We highly recommend Bob for training!
