  • First off, I'm a New Orleanian, so be warned of my standards in reviewing businesses that are outside of New Orleans yet which boast a New Orleans theme. I recently went to Marigny twice on a trip to Charlotte. My friends took me here, bragging about how great the place was and curious to see if it reminded me of home. Wow. Not...at...all. The place is done up to look like a million bucks, and carries the name "Marigny" which is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans after the French Quarter. The Marigny neighborhood is historic and shows it well. Lots of stucco, rusted brass, wrought iron, aged wood, and cracked plaster fill the bars and clubs of the area. However this place looks like a cheesy 90s Vegas hotel lobby in comparison to even the most recently renovated Frenchmen Street club. It's really a disgrace. The place should be called "WeHo" from what I observed. The aged charm of my beloved city is nowhere to be found in this nightclub, but appears to be a Mecca of glorified IKEA commercial furnishings and lighting. Secondly the music is ill fitting of the intended theme. Top 40 and R&B in New Orleans? Only on touristy Bourbon Street, friends. The music of New Orleans is Zydeco, jazz, blues, funk, bounce, and Cajun electronica (Google it). There was more booty popping to "Call Me Maybe" in this place than at a middle school dance! Last, the attitude of the patrons was baffling. I understand that Charlotte is a wannabe Atlanta, but ATL has class. The bar guests were pretentious, dressed to every last penny of their maxed out platinum cards, boisterous to a fault, and unrelentingly phony. It was like I had stepped into an alternate dimension where narcissism was the new norm. With the exception of my friends and a few older folks I met there, I felt out of place and overly educated. (And that's saying something for a 29 year old New Orleans democrat.) Overall I'm sure this club is enjoyable for the yuppies and hipsters of the New South's most flagrantly dull city. But for anyone well traveled looking for a carefree night with great music and an original beat, don't make the trip down to Marigny. Do yourself a favor and hit up the Frenchmen Street bars blaring funky jazz and original New Orleans style hip-hop in the original Marigny neighborhood of the Crescent City. Or if you really want to feel this bar's vibe, fire up a disco ball in your living room blasting Radio Disney while sipping a Zima and save yourself the cover charge.
