  • WE LOVE LIVE EVENTS. Let me just say that from jump. Plays, concerts, comedy shows; it's something we've come to enjoy sharing together over the decades. And nowhere should be better at doing any of that than Sin City. Locals will understand when I say this, but we've always thought that the hassle of getting to the Strip from where we live (about a 15 minute drive away) hasn't been worth putting up with the traffic and the hustle and bustle. We HAVE seen some good Strip-related shows, but we prefer going "off-road" whenever possible. And no place does off-Strip shows and events better, to our knowledge, than The Smith Center. Very reminiscent of an extremely upscale version of our favorite music hall, the Birchmere, which we sadly left behind when we moved here, The Smith Center offers, first of all, a wide diversity of entertainment. So far, we've seen Ramsey Lewis, Arturo Sandoval, Ann Hampton Callaway, AND even the Las Vegas Symphony, which did an incredible night of John Williams selections. The Cabaret Jazz Club is a beautiful, classy, intimate space that offers the unique experience of meeting new people along with hearing new music, since the tables on the floor seat four, and though seating is assigned, you only know who you'll be sitting with once you take your places, and it's been a lovely experience for that most part. (Also probably because the crowds for the jazz shows tend to skew more towards OUR age group.) And the acoustics and setup are marvelous - I love a place where there really isn't a "bad" seat in the house. And the food is perfect! Cold sandwiches, chips and bubbly, or whatever the drink of your choice is, and usually pretty good as a lite supper until after the show. Reynolds Hall is a breathtaking space, not unlike the theaters and opera houses of old. It makes you involuntarily GASP the first moment you walk in. I couldn't believe we got to see the LVSO in such a gorgeous venue - like something right out of AMADEUS, except the 21st Century version. We have a Burt Bacharach show coming up there, and I can't wait to be able to see that! From what I understand, the Center hasn't been in Vegas that long, and the view of the Strip from the front door is always worth it. I hope people continue to patronize the Center, so it will continue to bring more great shows and artists to those of us who, a majority of the time, prefer something other than what the Strip offers.
