| - After being a patient here for a year or so, I came in for an emergency appointment. (They got me right away, so props for that.) They took several x-rays and told me that in spite of severe pain, the tooth looked completely fine; no cracks, breaks, or cavities. They then tried a cold-test on the tooth, and based on my reaction of bursting into tears, told me the root was dying and that I would need a root canal and crown, which they could do the next day. Again, props for seeing that I was truly suffering...but I don't have dental insurance, and they would need the thousands of dollars up front. I told them that I would need a second opinion because, hey, not only are you doing a lot of work on a tooth that they said looked perfectly healthy, but also that is A LOT of money to come up with on the spot, especially for a nursing student. I went to my other dentist who gave me an injection to calm down the nerve, wrote me a scrip for light pain killers, and told me that if it hadn't resolved in a week, we would go ahead with the root canal. When I called Drake's office to report this and postpone my appt. with them, they said it seemed reasonable. Three days later I received a letter in the mail stating that because I wasn't happy with their treatment, I was being "excused from their client list." Translation? "You won't do what we tell you, so you're fired as our patient."
The pain resolved without further intervention 2 days later, and 6 months after that, I haven't had any further problems. While the staff there is funny and competent, I was hurt by the impression that they cared more about hanging crystal balls in their waiting room and ordering funky purple chairs than they were about respecting the best interests of their patient.
