  • Rita's Italian Ice or Rita's as I know it - a Phildelphia based water ice franchise corporation. I remember when the very first Rita's opened in Philadelphia and was a loyal customer for years at various locations throughout the city. At the time you were lucky if they had 5 flavors but you could always find Lemon, Cherry and Chocolate. Then Rita's sold and went corporate .. The result - franchises popping up across the country. I was soo excited when I found out that Rita's would be coming to Vegas as I REALLY missed water ice. I've been watching the Facebook and Twitter for weeks. Today - they finally opened to the public with free water ice thru tomorrow July 3rd. First - I'll say I'm not used to the "store front" - I'm used the good ole' walk up window so this was a change for me. The automated blingy signs inside didn't make me feel like I was back home. Flavors of the day were Alex's Lemonade, Cherry, Chocolate, Mango, Peach, Swedish Fish, Pear, Strawberry, Fudge Brownie Cream Ice, Sugar Free Cherry and Mango-Peach and Vanilla and Chocolate custard. You have several choices here - plain ice, a Misto which is a mix of ice and custard blended into a drink similar to a milkshake, a gelati - layers of custard and ice, or a Blendini - ice, custard and your choice of a mix-in like M&M's (similar to a Dairy Queen Blizzard) .. I opted for the free choice today - water ice and chose Cherry as it's a staple flavor in the water ice world. I was soo excited and then they started to scoop it into the cup. It looked different - it wasn't the same as the Rita's I grew up with and lived with for soo many years. It was harder, more icy. We left the store both with the same flavor, got in the car and tried it out. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT ...After driving damn near 30 miles to get there - it was seriously soo much of a disappointment that we threw out our water ice and went elsewhere for dessert. The water ice was too "icy", VERY tasteless, and reminded me of what happens when you get a snow cone and you eat the syrup too fast - you're left with white ice. This is NOT the Rita's I grew up on .. It's not the Rita's I remember eating back home last summer. I don't know if all of the Rita's across the country taste the same now but my experience was not pleasant. I really don't advise anyone driving across town just to try what they remember Rita's to be. You'll be upset and eating calories for nothing.
