I would like to start by saying this bar has a great selection of beer (draft and a ton of bottles in the cooler) and this is not my first experience. Yet, my previous experience I believe was sitting at the bar a few years back for one beer.
However, for being listed as one of the best beer bars in the Phoenix area I was disappointed today. We sat down for a beer in a full bar (a couple seats at the bar and only a couple open tables), nobody came to greet us. Now I understand this may be a place where you have to go to the bar to be served (which I realized after sitting down for a bit) but when I walked to the bar looking for a bartender, I was asked by the bartender to move out of her way because she had some beers in her hand to put in the cooler - fair enough. However, then she went behind the bar and stood there and stared at me and did not communicate whatsoever. Typically I'd expect, what can I get you, how are you?, do you have any questions about the beers, etc... I had to ask her twice if I could get a beer. She finally asked me what I wanted and served it but it was definitely a poor experience and very odd communication happening between the bartender and me for reasons I'm unclear. With so many craft beer bars and breweries popping up, it's going to be difficult for me to go back to Taste of Tops.
I recommend having two bartenders servers on busy nights (I saw a flyer for a New Belgium event happening on this night on my way out) and taking care of tables as well as the folks at the bar. Cheers.
