My wife and I met in Market Square to grab some lunch. We decided to go to one of the burrito places and as we were walking to it, we ran into one of her friends. He had just come from Pirata and suggested we go there. What the heck, why not try something new? So we headed off to Pirata.
The first thing I'll say is that our bill was $38. For 2 people. For 3 menu items. That's expensive for lunch. The second thing I'll say is that it was worth every penny. It was probably the best meal I've had in a while. We only got three things but each one was delicious, perfectly plated and in just the right portions. One big plus is that they bring you a bottle of COLD water and leave it at the table. I drink a lot of water so I was especially thankful for this.
We started off with the smoked pineapple guacamole. Quite possibly the best guac I've ever had. The smoked pineapple is a great addition to the guac, giving it the perfect hint of sweetness. It was plated with some large leaves in the guac (maybe from a pineapple?) and more than enough fried plantain and malanga chips that were presented wrapped up with a bow.
For our meals we got the tacos which included 2 tacos each that were delivered on a cutting board or random piece of wood. I got the jerk chicken and she got the mahi mahi. The jerk sauce was super spicy but not overly spicy and also super delicious. It was complemented well with a sweet mango chutney and a refreshing cucumber raiata. Her mahi was breaded and cooked to perfection and topped with pickled red cabbage and jalapenos. We didn't say a word for about 3 minutes and then our tacos were gone. It all happened so fast.
The other great thing about the place was the music which, when we were there, was a remix of 80s tunes (mostly Michael Jackson) into reggae. I liked it.
