  • The MIM is a GORGEOUS museum full of historical and modern treasures. My boyfriend brought me here last weekend and we had the best time! Upon arrival they give you headsets and a little "walkman" that auto plays each time you step in front of one of the exhibits that has a flatscreen TV playing a video. The museum is generally organized by continent and then broken down by country. I would definitely suggest wearing comfy shoes because you will be doing A LOT of walking if you plan to see all of the exhibits. We assumed we would need three hours to see everything and they close at 5pm, so we got there at 2pm. Well, we had to end up rushing through the last half of the museum once they announced over the loud speaker we only had 30 minutes until closing. And we did not visit the cafeteria or the room with playable instruments (too many kids going berserk in there and we frown upon children). So in short- wear cushioned shoes and give yourself at least 3.5 hours to see everything- longer if you want to "play" and eat there! My favorite continent by far was Asia...so many colorful costumes on display and so many intricate, elaborate instruments. It is visually stunning! And also incredibly educational from a geography perspective! I've traveled a bit internationally and thought I was knowledgeable and worldly, but encountered countries at the MIM I'd never even heard of before! That was a treat for sure. As far as the North American/United States section of the museum goes, the hip hop portion was uber tiny and disappointing. One of the smallest exhibits in the entire museum- we really expected more. And while there were Elvis, Maroon 5, and Taylor Swift specific exhibits, we didn't see anything Motown related which was kind of a big let-down! Other than that though, MIM provides a richly diverse tapestry of musical history and culture. Tickets are $20 (parking lot is vast and free) and honestly that's a bargain for all of the astonishingly cool things you'll see, LEARN, and experience here.
