| - The CNE is a quintessentially Toronto experience. Everyone must visit the CNE (aka the "Ex" for Exhibition) at least once. However, you must prepare yourself, for this place is a bit of a zoo. If you know what to expect, and plan your day properly, you can have a lot of fun here.
Sure, we can criticize the Ex for many shortcomings. For starters, the crowds can be overwhelming. Second, everything is expensive. Parking can be as much as $35. Entrance is $18 for an adult $15 for a child 5-13 yo, free for 4 and under. An (unlimited) rides pass is $40 (for any age.) Third, it's very hard to find parking in the first place (even for those obscene prices) and it may be a nightmare to get out of the parking lot at the end of the day. Fourth, it's a bit "commercialized" with too many vendors.
So, with all these negatives, what's so great about the Ex? Well it's a country fair on steroids. During the 18 days of the year when it operates, it attracts 1.3M visitors. It's the 7th largest annual fair in North America. Here are some of the things to love about the Ex. For starters, the rides are a lot of fun. There are rides for everyone, even young kids (located in a specific area of the park.) Second, the food is outrageous. Visit the Food Building for some unique carnival food. You will find the usual staples like corn dogs, pulled pork sandwiches etc. But you will also find unusual offerings like make-your-own gourmet Jamaican beef patties. Or how about Thanksgiving turkey waffle? Third, there are lots of different type of activities. From dog shows, farm animals, cat competitions, sand castles, lots of shopping for unique items, Mardi Gras parade, all the way to acrobat shows and concerts, and much more. The highlight is the Canadian International Air Show during the Labour Day Weekend. It's a must-see.
So, the key is to come prepared. Psych yourself for a LONG day. Expect a sea of people. Expect long walks, and line ups. Take public transportation (it's very convenient.) Do buy the full day ride pass, it will pay for itself quickly. Do your homework and figure out what you want to see ahead of time.
