  • A Tres Leches Cafe haiku: I love the idea It's Mexican style coffee But, too sweet for me You know how a lot of Starbucks and Dutch Bros coffee is loaded with sugar and extra flavors to mask the taste of the coffee you are drinking? This is the Mexican-infused version. The shop offers flavors such as horchata, churro, and Azteca (Mexican style chocolate) to sweeten and caffeinate your day. The shop is a tiny converted house surrounded by some older businesses, houses, and apartment complexes. I drove through the narrow driveway to find that there were only 4-5 parking spots and they were all occupied. So, I had to loop around through the equally narrow alleyway back to Roosevelt and park on the street, dodging oncoming traffic when opening my door and getting out. When I walked in around noon the entire shop was really dark. Like, so dark it was hard to see people's faces. Are there vampires living here or something? Anyways, strigoi suspicions aside, the ladies working here were very sweet and friendly. After explaining the menu to me I decided on an iced cafe horchata, large size, with almond milk. I realized too late (After I had paid) that there was a check-in offer, but I was excited to see that it said "$1 for any drink" so I figured I'd get a second drink since it was so cheap. After some confusion, it turns out the check-in offer is poorly worded because it is actually "$1 OFF any drink" not FOR a drink so I decided to save it for a future visit. I also spied the delectable looking pastries in a case to the side and decided on a pumpkin filled pastry. I got my order to go. My first reaction when I took my first sip in the car was "Whoa, I just got punched in the gut with a sugar bomb!" It was way too sweet for my tastes. I think it's sweeter than regular horchata I've had at Mexican restaurants. I did like the cinnamon spice and actual coffee in it, although both were hard to taste with all the sugar in the drink. The pumpkin pastry had soft dough with a tart filling. Call me an old geezer, but if it's a pain for me to find parking I'm not very inspired to go to a place more than once. Also, while I appreciate the unique nature of the coffee, they need to focus on creating a fine balance of flavors rather than loading up drinks with a ton of sweeteners.
