| - If I can dissuade even one person from the nightmare that is Cornerstone Ranch, then I will be overwhelmingly satisfied. The complex touts itself as "pet friendly" yet they are anything but. We had a dog that the complex management seemingly singled us out for having. While other neighboring dogs barked incessantly, (evidence on videotape) my son's girlfriend would get calls at work stating the dog was barking, and was sworn at and berated by Darlene, the complex's general manager. To alleviate any additional problems, the dog went to obedience school, had a bark collar, had frequent dog sitters and even went to dog daycare. When notification was received on the front door regarding the "dog's barking" no one in office wanted to speak with us. In addition to the $250.00 pet deposit and additional pet rent of $50.00 a month, there was a fee of $50.00 to have the dog's DNA tested, in case the dog defecated on the property! Not surprisingly, the dog just happened to come up as a positive match for poop found on the property and a fine assessed of $150.00. In good faith, without any evidence that it was our dog's feces, my son's girlfriend paid the fine, in an effort to be good tenants. Evidently, paying fines and timely rent was not good enough for Darlene, the complex general manager, because she gave a notice to evict two weeks before Christmas. The notice gave ten days to vacate the property with absolutely no discussion, or any attempts towards resolution. The office staff flatly refused to speak with any of us, so we enlisted the help of an attorney. The attorney presented the office with a compromise to avoid the eviction; he was also ignored. On move out day, the option of breaking the lease and paying several months' of rent or face the filing of the eviction was given . They GLADLY accepted several thousands of dollars for the three months still left on the rental agreement and also kept the full month of December, even though we were out by the 14th. Cornerstone Ranch never acknowledged the attorney nor his letter, even though a second letter was sent from his office. With no other options, within ten days of the notice, we packed and moved out, and the apartment was spotless (per usual standards of duration of time living there). The maintenance person conducted a walk through, (because Darlene stated "I don't DO that") and he approved the status of the cleaning with the understanding that half of the deposit would go towards carpet replacement, and the rest would be returned. After repeated phone calls to the office to attempt to determine when we would receive the remaining deposit, not surprisingly, we were informed that NONE of the deposit would be returned because the apartment "was a disaster" when we left, a full three months after we vacated. We contacted the owner of the property, who acted very surprised that we had found him, and we expressed our concern about his office staff. He said he lets his "management team" handle issues with the complex, yet the "management team" IS the issue. They know that most people cannot afford or do not want to go to court to fight them and they are counting on you not knowing your rental rights. Horrible, horrible experience with smug, distasteful, rude, unethical management staff. Run, don't walk, to ANY other complex.
