| - I was recently in town for a family matter and having seen this place on one of those Top 10 lists online, I decided to stop by to check it out. This was a very unique donut shop where not only are the donuts mini-sized but nearly all of their donut flavors are made to order. Think Chipotle but with donuts where they have all of their frostings and toppings behind the counter waiting for you to tell the friendly staff what you want. The majority of their flavors are cake based (which I prefer over yeast-raised) so behind the staff are rows upon rows of freshly made naked plain cake donuts just waiting to be dressed.
I decided to get a dozen and suffering from indecisiveness, it took me a while to figure out what kinds I wanted but the girl behind the counter was very friendly and patient with me which I appreciated. Thankfully, there was no one behind me so it didn't add to my anxiety of ordering! Total cost was only around $12! Coming from an area where I pay $3+ for gourmet donuts, I thought this was a complete steal.
Yes, I did share with my family when I brought them home but I admit that I ended up eating the majority of them. Again, these are mini-donuts so I didn't feel that bad woofing them down. Every flavor I had was delicious! The standouts were the Maple Bacon, Samoa, orange frosting, blueberry frosting, and Boston Creme.
My only slight criticism of the donuts themselves were that they didn't hold up very well. They were quite stale the next morning but ultimately, this is just a mark of them not using any additives or preservatives in their ingredients so the moral of the story here is you should eat these right away when you get them! I will definitely be back the next time I am in Pittsburgh.
