  • Man O Man this is a fun one from back in the day. While this place has the name cowboy in the title by no means should you be expecting some kind of authentic experience. Think Billy Crystal and Jack Palance in City Slickers type of authentic. This is very much the glamping version of trail rides. Nice. White. Neat. Clean. Sanitized. So pretty much perfect for the average Vegas tourist. The first thing worth noting about any of the rides is that nothing here is cheap. The rides are truly an investment in that the cheapest starts at $69 and goes up from there to over $300 per person. Kind of nuts I know. But before you think this is going to be a piss and vinegar fest, it's not. We did two different rides during two different visits. Visit #1 was in July which of course is the WRONG time of year to be in Vegas but I digress. We did the Sunset Trail Ride and Western BBQ. First thing is that it's really overpriced for what you get. I don't remember the exact times involved as it's been a while but the actual riding time was fairly short, the entire group riding was beyond huge and the food served while alright was akin to what you would pay $16 or $17 for at a Texas Roadhouse. After the ride they lit some fires, did some s'mores and sang a few songs which was nice but certainly not closer to two hundred rather than one hundred dollars nice. Visit #2 was done two years later in January for the Canyon Rim Ride and this was a much better experience. For this ride it was just the two of us along with one other person and our guide. Not bad at all. This one started early in the morning around 8 or 9 so everything was actually bordering on almost cold. The ride was a little more than two hours and was far more scenic. We stopped once or twice to give both our horses and any potential hemorrhoids a breather from too much saddle time but for the most part we covered a fair amount of ground. Four things worth mentioning: 1. While this might seem like it's "so far away" from the basic scrum of Vegas Strip Life, it's not. We stayed each time at Mandalay and give or take with traffic it was 20 miles and a 25-30 minute drive. Super easy. 2. When you do get into the Red Rock Canyon area itself, take the time to enjoy the scenery and maybe even plan for some hiking before/after/or make another trip to the area while you're in town because it's very picturesque. 3. The trail rides go on year round so it's not hard to make a reservation. Know that at least in our experience the night time BBQ ride certainly I don't want to say that it sells out, because the one cowboy said that they can keep bringing in more horses that they keep in the area to handle as much demand as possible, but it gets very busy. One of the longer rides during the week is much better. 4. If you don't care for horses (Holla!) or if you're a little timid around/on them (Double Holla!) let the cowboys know. While you might take some gentle ribbing from them they can hook you up with a donkey type hybrid instead. Not built for speed by any means but then again these are trail rides not rides where (Thank God) you're going to be running-galloping-cantering-shimmying-twerking-doing the electric slide or anything past a nice easy walk which makes it perfect for an ass. Look, it's an expensive side trip but it's a unique way to be "so close" yet "so far" away from the lights and noise of the city. If you can afford it, it should be on your list of things to try while in town.
