| - I'm gonna have to say this whole experience was overrated. Yes, it's cool that the funicular is old and that you get a great view when you get to the top, but honestly it really wasn't worth the time we spent doing it. Add in the poorly managed ticket office and crabby people staffing it and I could have lived without this experience. We went mid-day and were thinking once we got to the top that there would be something to see or do, but there wasn't. We looked out over the city, said OOH, very pretty, now what? Walked down the deserted looking street and tried to find a restaurant to have lunch, which was our plan when we had gotten in line. No go. Not a lot of options up there in the immediate vicinity, 2 were closed, 1 we picked we got a sandwich, fries & a drink. Best to do for dinner I guess.
Ok - we waited 30 minutes in line, get to the front, only to find that you have to buy a ticket from a woman who is in a glass enclosed booth, they only take cash & exact change and you have to buy your return ticket there, no ticket sales at the top. The whole thing was silly - she literally talked to you from a hole in the window, and you had to stuff your money in a tube. If you didn't have exact change you got scolded and told to use one of their change machines to get the right amount. No signs explain this while you are waiting in line, they wait to you get to the final spot to tell you this - of course slowing everything down while everyone scrambles for money and buys a ticket. Ok - on to the funicular. Only so many allowed at a time, there is a weight limit. It seemed pretty arbitrary though how they decided how many people got on. Once on the 'money' lady comes on to explain to some people on there who didn't have the right change for the return trip how to get money at the top so they could pay her when they got down. We weren't sure who she was addressing and my bf said something, she actually said 'I'm not talking to you'. Unbelievably rude! All we could do was laugh at how poorly run the place was, like they set the process up in the 40's and haven't updated since.
After our brief stint up top, we had to get in line to return. More of the same. Had to wait in line and a guy kept coming out of his office to yell at everyone to get against the wall. You know what? A sign telling people where to queue up would be pretty helpful then you wouldn't have to leave your office every 5 minutes to tell people what to do. I think they like the power trip though. At the bottom we had to give our return ticket to them.
So - that's it, nice view, but there are a lot of nice views all around there, at the bridges, on the river, you can drive up if you want also. So - not sure why everyone is raving about this activity.
