| - I've been a member at Mountainside Fitness for six years - since about the time it opened the facility closest to my home. This review is specific to the Scottsdale Pavilions location because that's the location I exclusively use. I've noticed some little things like repairs not being completed as quickly as they used to be, i.e., there's a bulb out over the sinks in the women's locker room that's been out for months; a soap dispenser in that same location fell off the wall a few weeks ago and is still missing, etc. One of the biggest issues I've noticed with respect to cleanliness is that the complementary towels smell funky. Even when they're "clean" they have a sour, old sweat smell. The towels are fairly new, too, but it's bad enough that I've started carrying my own from home. Another thing this location has changed (maybe it's universal across all the Mountainside locations) is the variety of group fitness classes. Over time, the number of different classes has seriously declined. Mountainside at the Pavilions offers 35 group fitness classes a week, but they're basically all the same: Muscle and Zumba make up more than half of them, and if you can only get your workout in between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., they make up 90% of what's offered. I love the Muscle class, but if I can't get to the gym by 8:30 a.m., I can't take the class. Mountainside used to offer a better variety: some 30 minute classes, i.e., all abs, all lower body, all upper body, etc. Now, if you want a morning workout after the school/bus stop run, there are two choices. The good cardio classes are pretty much evening only. There's just no variety in terms of class times and that's dull. Pretty much my workouts have become limited to Muscle (if I can get there) and the elliptical machine. Now there's some incentive to get to the gym. Not to be completely negative, I can say the employees at the front desk are really friendly. That said, I'll probably be looking around at other gyms for some comparison shopping.
