| - I have wanted to do this since moving from Vancouver to Toronto last September, but I wasn't able to find anyone else who would go with me!
Given that the cost is quite high ($250 with tax) I can understand not everyone wants to shell out that kind of money. But the most common reaction I got was, "Are you nuts? No way!" So I resigned myself to the fact I may end up doing this alone someday.
Last week, a friend from Vancouver was visiting Toronto and she suggested we do the Edge Walk. Of course, I agreed. Initially, I wasn't sure about spending that much, but to me, this is likely going to be a one-time experience, so why not?!
We checked the weather report and chose the day that looked to be the best (sunny!) but after we bought our tickets, the weather kept changing. There were thunderstorms with lightning happening on the days leading up to our walk, and I was getting nervous that we'd be struck by lightning and turned into human bacon. Ok, not really, but I was concerned about it being rainy and overcast.
Well, I guess the Gods were smiling down on us that day, because it cleared up and it turned out to be a gorgeous day. Our walk time was 5:30pm and I ended up getting there a couple of minutes late so I was already a bit flustered when I arrived.
The process is very thorough when it comes to safety. The very first thing that happens once you've filled out your forms and signed the waiver, is they give you a breathalyzer to make sure you're not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They explain a few things, tell you to remove all jewelry (including your watch) and then scan you for guns and bombs. (Probably not guns and bombs, but they scan you for stuff you shouldn't take with you)
We suited up and got checked about 100 times to ensure our shoes wouldn't slip off and our harnesses were tight. I can tell you right now, I'm super glad I wasn't a dude right then and there, because that harness was TIGHT in the crotch area. Holy doodle. We were all walking pretty funny, let me tell you.
The actual walk was way more nerve wracking than I expected. I'm pretty adventurous, but my stomach did a few flip-flops when we put our toes over the edge and leaned forward!! Yikes! Glad I went to the bathroom before going out there, cause otherwise I might've peed a little. lol
Our guide had us do several poses for photos, some super cheesy, but for some reason, we all did it (thumbs up, "home alone" face, etc.) I think my only regret is that I didn't strike a better pose for my photos, because I look super dorky. Oh well.
If anyone is considering the walk, I highly recommend it. If the weather is great, you'll probably want your sunglasses on. I wore mine, but my friend didn't, and she wishes that she had. It was pretty windy up there, so my eyes were watering a bit, even with the sunglasses on.
You get a certificate at the end, as well as a DVD of the experience and a photo in a commemorative folder. You can also buy a USB flash drive ($25) with all the photos. It's weird, because you get the photos of everyone in your group as well, even the people you don't know. In any case, I'm really glad I did it. Maybe one day, I might do it again.
